surfmobile
« on: August 17, 2011, 11:21:41 AM »

Starting a new topic
for no good reason
other than it's flatter than heck.

Favorite surfmobiles from the past:

'67 Chevelle.  With "Aloha" racks, need I say more?
'74 Bus.  Great to sleep in, but it wasn't in a hurry to get anywhere.
'88 Trooper.  Fun on the beach at Hatteras, rust magnet.

Current:
'00  S-10.  Holds 2-3 boards in the bed locked up tight & out of sight.  Only fair gas mileage in return for the lack of umph.

Need a new ride.  The S-10's got 213K.
Thinking maybe a Jetta TDI wagon?

Suggestions?

Cool topic.  I love talking cars!

Favorite old mobile: (that I owned) was probably my Nissan Titan...had tons of HP and tons of room for anything but only got 17-18mpg.

Current mobile: 2006 Dodge Magnum.  Holds anything in my quiver either on the roof or inside (yes I can fit my 9'2" inside!) and I can throw my 14' kayak on the roof racks too.  Gets 25-26mpg around town and she's paid for!

Dream mobile: 60's vintage VW bus (split window with barn doors).

When I was in north San Diego county parking was a nightmare at all my local spots (Seaside, Cardiff, San Elijo) so my surf mobile was a 70's vintage Schwinn cruiser with racks...I still ride that bike all the time.

Yeah, I saw tons of guys riding those things with racks hanging off them.  Funny looking but in all reality a great idea.  SoCal is very hilly by the coast so biking can be a pain.  Those scooters are ideal...as long as you don't have to go on the freeway!!!!

^And those things are thrifty with gas too.
A prime concern for a surfmobile.
It's the tradeoff between space and fuel that's the rub.
For example, the Chevelle, notoriously poor on fuel,
had a three body trunk that you could camp out of for weeks
and a back seat sooo big that Mary Susan Delaney could......

I might be getting off topic here.

I like this one.
Maybe a bit more than I was planning to spend,
considering it's used and all.

My Honda Elite 150 circa 1989.  I rode that thing everywhere.  When I surfed I'd just sit on it with my board backwards sticking out towards the back.  Hard to explain, but it worked.  Imagine being 15 and having a scooter that went 75mph !!! & back then it cost .80 cents to fill up!!

Ya, I tried to talk him down to like
$39,975 delivered, of course  ;), since it's in Bellingham
which is actually a nice place.  My sis lives there.

One of the worst ever surf vehicles:
'80 Honda Civic CVCC.  1200cc motor, 45mpg, 65mph foot on the floor.
Could barely fit a shorty inside
and it would have blown off the road with racks.
I hit a seagull on the Bonner Bridge once (connects Nags Head to Hatteras Island)
and the damage almost totaled it.
If it had been a Pelican, I wouldn't be here to tell the tale.

Worst surf vehicle for me was a 1989 olds cutlass supreme 2 door, it had an inverted V6 in it. Tons of pickup, bad for the wallet.

Best surf vehicle was my 2001 4door rodeo. I could put SBs/LBs in it without using the roof rack. 18-21mpg is why I sold it. I had that illegal tint on it, when the AC kicked in, it would get cold really fast. I wish I hadnt sold it now. I hate driving my car on the beach.

Worst surf vehicle was my Jeep (any of the 4 I've had).  They are awesome if you are going to a remote spot off road but let's be honest...aside from OBX when are you doing that?  All had soft tops so no roof racks and fitting a SB in it was like playing Jenga...never mind a LB.
